Due to the systemic change al-Farabi KazNU shows progressive advancement in global university rankings. According to the QS World University Rankings in 2014 in the list of 800 best universities were included nine universities in Kazakhstan. The best among the universities of Kazakhstan and third among the universities in the ranking, over the last 2 years is the al-Farabi Kazakh National University, who took the 305th place in 2014. Promotion of the University in the rankings is not possible without working out a detailed University Strategy that would be able to consolidate the efforts of all participants: staff, chairs, faculties, and of all the departments of the University. In this connection, the University conducted a comprehensive structural modernization, there are implemented such items as: process management; system management, results-oriented and rating-assessment of achievements. KazNU first moved to the double-diploma education programs. In cooperation with universities of America, Europe and Asia educational programs with the issuance of dual diplomas and international certificates have successfully implemented.

International academic mobility of students of KazNU named after al-Farabi - one of the basic conditions for the formation of highly advanced specialists who are competitive in the domestic and international labor market. The objectives of academic mobility of KazNU are training, exchanging the experience, improving the quality of scientific research, transformation in the academic environment and the study of the culture and traditions of other countries.
KazNU successfully cooperates with more than 400 major universities around the world. In KazNU lectures are given annually, consultations are conducted and more than 150 well-known foreign scientists share with experience. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Czech Republic, Sweden, Estonia, USA, etc.
Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi first in Central Asia joined the «United Nation Academic Impact» (Academic Impact) program, aimed at supporting ten universally accepted principles of the United Nations, related to human rights, literacy, sustainable development and conflict resolution. In 2014, KazNU took over a leadership of a global UN hub of UNAI program on sustainable development. In March 2014 the university became the Central Asian hub for UNITWIN Sustainable Development program of UNESCO.
Al-Farabi KazNU has become the only one among the universities of the CIS countries which had an opportunity to carry out its own section at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development “RIO+20” , which was held in 2012 in RIO de Janeiro (Brazil).
Al-Farabi KazNU is the only one among the universities of the CIS countries which got a right to hold a separate section which is dedicated to ideas of Nazarbayev N.A. President of Republic of Kazakhstan - "Global energy and ecological development strategy" and "Green Bridge".
The University has become one of the most active sites to promote the idea of sustainable development on the G-Global platform. For the more active involvement of the youth in studying of the problems of sustainable development in jointly with Columbia University “Global Classroom” Master-level Program on Sustainable Development opened and successfully operats.
The University is a leader in participating in TEMPUS, ERASMUSMUNDUS EU programs in the Republic of Kazakhstan, which allows better to adapt the basic principles of the Bologna process and to bring academic university policy closer to European standards. These are 9 TEMPUS projects, 7 ERASMUS MUNDUS projects, Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi takes place as a co-coordinator in 3 projects.
